Why do I have droopy eyelids?

As you age, the collagen and elasticity in your skin begin to fade. Depending on your age, one of the first areas you may notice these changes is around your eyes.

Some factors that increase your chances of developing droopy or saggy eyes include:

  • Genetics
  • Ptosis, or muscle weakness around the eyes
  • Thin skin around the face and eyes

While blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is typically viewed as a cosmetic solution to droopy eyelids, it can also be a medically necessary surgery if your saggy eyelids are affecting your vision.

How does blepharoplasty work?

Blepharoplasty involves removing excess fat, skin, and muscle from underneath and around your eyes. This quick procedure can help reduce the effects of:

  • Bags underneath your eyes
  • Droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin on your lower eyelids
  • Wrinkled skin around your eyes

In addition to possible vision problems, droopy eyelids make you look older and less alert. By removing excess skin and tightening the skin around your eyes, you can instantly freshen up your appearance.

If you opt for surgery on your upper and lower eyelids, Dr. DuMornay starts on your upper lids first, cutting along the fold to remove any excess tissue that may be making you look older or hindering your vision.

When he starts working on your lower lids, Dr. DuMornay makes an incision along your eye’s natural crease, just underneath your lash line, to redistribute fat and muscle that can cause your eyes to look puffy and saggy.

What can I expect after blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that requires relatively little downtime. You will be able to leave within a few hours of the procedure, as long as there are no complications.

For the first few days after the procedure, you may experience:

  • Watery eyes
  • Double vision
  • Discomfort or eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Mild bruising

Avoid heavy lifting and exercise for at least a week after eyelid surgery and apply ice packs to reduce swelling. Follow any other aftercare instructions Dr. DuMornay provides.

After the first couple of weeks, your bruising and swelling should subside. The results of blepharoplasty become more apparent over time, and you should notice a more youthful, polished appearance around your eyes within the first month.
